Travel Golf Bags Suit All Golf Travel Needs
You can get hard travel bags and soft travel bags, and your decision should be based on your golfing travel needs rather than any other consideration. Price is important, of course, and that will also make a difference as to what you finally opt for, but the type of travel you are involved with is the most important factor.
Air Travel is Hard on Golf Clubs
Air travel can be hard on golf bags and their contents. It is not always possible for baggage handlers to treat golf bags any different from other forms of baggage, and accidents do tend to happen. The hard bags provide the highest amount of protection and the soft bags the lowest amount. The hard bags, however, are the higher priced. The soft bags are easier to carry.
Golf clubs are expensive, and their value to many golfers is greater than their replacement cost. To many their clubs are irreplaceable, irrespective of how much they are insured for; you can’t insure experience in use or sentimental value. It can take a golfer years to recover a game lost with a set of clubs. You can’t insure for that. The good golfers tend to travel more and the hard travel bags give them that bit more insurance against damage in transit.
The Average Golfer Travels less than a Professional
On the other hand, the average golfer tends to travel a lot less that a pro, and then mostly by auto. For many it involves no more than a few miles drive to the golf course. All they need is a bag case that will provide them with average protection during a car drive. A soft cover case is probably good enough, and they have the benefit of less bulk, lightness and better maneuverability. You can get all the rest of the options that come with the more expensive hard covers without paying so much for them.
The question of bulk is a valid one. The hard golf travel bags are so bulky that they won’t fit in all vehicles. Some hire vehicles have trunks that are too small, and an appropriate automobile has to be ordered from the hire company in advance. Not so with the less bulky soft covered case. It’s also easier to get in and out of the trunk, though you must make sure that it has decent handles when you buy it.
All is not Black and White Between Hard and Soft Travel Bags
Another feature you should check out is the security strap arrangement. Your Golf Bag should be able to be strapped securely into whatever type of travel bag you choose. If not, it will bang about inside and your Golf Clubs might get damaged. Especially with a soft case: here you must pack it properly and protect the club heads with clothing or towels to make sure that they cannot move around. This is something you must take into serious consideration when checking out the soft travel bag of your choice. Make sure it can secure the clubs and the club heads as well as the golf bag.
These are the major consideration when shopping for travel golf bags, and all is not black and white. Both the hard and the soft varieties have their merits and your choice should be based on the amount and type of travel you do. It is not always the most expensive that is best for you.

Dad’s never have "everything". A present from his daughter no matter what it is, will make him happy.
But here are a few suggestions –
It really depends on how much you want to spend. He likes Nascar so go to Nascar.com and get him something with Jeff Gordon on it. Go to the Vols’ webpage and get something from it. Or give him a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant or one to play a round of golf at his favorite course.
Go have a formal picture of yourself and any siblings and have it framed. Dads always love pictures.
My dad collected die-cast cars and trucks so we always had the perfect gift.
Good luck!

There are all kinds of Jeff Gordon collectibles, from clothing, watches, die cast calenders, paper products. If not sure, go to nascar.com and look around at there products. Guys really go for the 1/24 scale of die cast cars made by Action (not walmart brand) see if there is a hobby store around your area that carries the real stuff for Nascar. or if you want to go all out get tickets for a nascar race. or if you have Direct TV, right now for about $20.00 you can get the last few races on TV, where he can experience being in the car with a driver and hearing what the driver is saying during the races. (can’t remember what it is called, but you could do a search on directv and find out.

Okay, you know your dad much better than anyone here on this Forum, so only you can really decide what to get him, based upon what we suggest. But, here’s an Idea. Go to http://www.sciplus.com and look through the listing of all the cool stuff there. Also, what Magazines does he like to read ? The best one, if he doesn’t have it already, is http://www.theweek.com . Read the on line page. The Printed version is actually much better. It comes ou every week, and it’s a very brief compilation of News from all over the world, from all other sources, Time, Newsweek, Salon, The Onion, CNN, Fox News, The Washington Post, New York Times, on and on. and it’s only about 54 Pages. In only about an Hour of reading, he will get the equivalent of many Hours of Information, much better than any TV or Newspaper ! This is , quite simply the best News Magazine ever ! It ain’t Cheap, at about $50 a Year, but it’s well worth it ! And, they offer a free trial, so you can try it. But you will like it ! Bet your Dad will too !

Give him a gift card to Walmart or a sports shop (maybe) or to a great restuarant that he likes or to his favorite movie theater (if he likes movies). Does he need anything for his car; like new carpet pads (two for the front seats and two for the back). That’s what I asked my daughter to get me one year.
Does he have a cell phone? Or does he want one?

I know how you feel about gifts for dads, I’m struggling with mine as well!
But from the top of my head, the first things that came to mind when I read your post were:
You said he travels a lot on a plane with his business. I was just in the mall yesterday and in one store, they had a neck pillow like this:
http://img.alibaba.com/photo/51566794/Memory_Foam_Neck_Pillow.jpg
They are so incredibly comfy and very nice for plane rides. Not too expensive either.
Also, I don’t know if you have a Personally Yours / Things Engraved / Things Remembered anywhere in your city (all the same company, different names), but for Father’s Day, I got my dad a golf keychain, as he loves golf, and I engraved it to say "#1 Dad" on it. He uses it all the time. Very handy and personal.
You can also get him something related to Jeff Gordon like a t-shirt, autographed photo and frame it, etc.
And I know this wasn’t on your list of likes, but why not get a personalized calendar made? You can use photos of yourself (and if you have any siblings), growing up and add some photos of you with your father for each month. Surely everyone needs a new calendar for 2008! Walmart and Staples both do them.
Hope that helps a bit.

Boring Dads are a good thing they don’t beat or yell at you, they don’t cause pain in your life.
Be Grateful!!
When in doubt I always give food… I make my Dad some sort of cookies, cake, even brownies or fudge. He doesn’t have to store it just eat it and he is very happy to get something homemade from his daughter. Christmas is about thoughtfulness not material gains.
