The club industry is has experienced what could be the toughest two years in recent memory. We can’t fix the economy, we can’t significantly impact the number of golfers coming into the game and we can’t change the over-supply of country clubs, Golf Clubs and semi-private/public Golf Courses, but we can minimize the negatives and accentuate the positives. To do this you will need a Membership Marketing Plan.

These are not the times to be spending tens of thousands on exhaustive, comprehensive, professionally done studies and plans (although there is nothing wrong with that if you can afford it), but there are many things you can do to develop an effective membership marketing tool that will give structure, direction, measurement and a much needed boost to your membership efforts next year. Here are some planning tips:

1. Gather Membership Information – Create a spreadsheet and line up your membership historical data (i.e. numbers of members in each category, dues charged, number new members per year, initiation fee amounts, list the various promotions and drives, numbers of resignations, etc.)

2. Gather Comparative Club Information – Typically, someone among the clubs in your region has done a study and you have participated. If not, then you do one. Create a spreadsheet and plot your club in position to the others.

3. Demographics – You can order a demographic study from Claritas or any one of a number of companies. Determine if there is growth and where. Stay inside of a 20 mile radius. Also, drive around and locate growth pockets where homes are priced in a range that would support membership in a private club.

4. Use 2009 Data – If you have it, use data from a recent survey, guest usage, spending trends, rounds of golf. If you lack data in certain areas, then plan to obtain that data in 2010 for use next year.

5. Don’t Overlook the Social, Sports and Dining Membership Opportunities. Selling Golf Memberships is likely to be rough sledding next year, so adding peripheral memberships, even annual memberships might be suitable for your club’s bottom line while also adding activity and life to the social part of the club.

6. Save Your Members’ Money – Arrange services and activities that save members on their bottom line. Help them rationalize their monthly dues. If you have not ventured into “Parents’ Night Out” or “child care,” or off-site activities: such as members’ bowling league; nature hikes; BYO BBQ’s; Factory Outlet shopping trips, etc., perhaps you might think about it. One club in California actually offered enough “Concierge” services on the menu that if a member were to take advantage of half of them, they would break even on their monthly dues. One popular idea was a dry cleaning service: The club negotiated a deep discount on dry cleaning and acted as the pick up and drop off point. Same for weekly on-site car detailing.

7. Get Member Input – Obtain input from your members, committees and your Board as to what the membership goals should be for the club. You can bet that “Member Retention” and “Reduce the Selling List” will be on most people’s minds.

8. Set Appropriate Goals – Nothing will frustrate the club’s leadership, management and staff more next year than unrealistic goals. It is going to be a tough year for most clubs in nearly every market area.

9. Develop Action Items – Set between 5 and 10 very specific goals. Write down your methodology, timetable, who will be involved and what you expect the outcome to be. These do not have to be all financial in their nature. Just a few ideas: Introduce yourself to 10 members or family members each week; someone you have not gotten to know yet. Invite them to lunch or to have coffee, just to get to know them. Concentrate on Member Referrals and make it easier than ever for your members to show off their club and to sponsor. Get your Head Professionals (Golf and Tennis) actively involved in membership growth efforts. Develop a new and improved New Member Orientation Program.

10. Plan on Intermittent Polling – Poll Your Members throughout the year on the specific “Action Items” using mini-surveys, web surveys, tabletop surveys, or even walk-around polls to see if your Membership Goals and Action Items are making a difference. Use the information to adjust and to prepare for your 2011 Membership Marketing Plan.

Next year promises to offer significant challenges, however, the club industry has been here many times before. Over the past 20 years in consulting, I have experienced at least three down-cycles. Does anyone remember the “Tax Reform Act of 1986″? General Managers and Membership Directors thought the sky was going to fall right down on the fairways. We are still here and so are those fairways. The saying: “It is what it is” is becoming a mantra. Be realistic with planning and be proactive with the things you can affect. If you need encouragement or assistance, give me a call or shoot me an email.

Gift baskets are always popular and a great idea to give as a gift whether for Mother’s Day or any other time of the year. Moms love to receive gift baskets. Making your own gourmet ‘mom’ gift basket is cheap and easy. You can fill your gift basket with a variety of inexpensive quality items; you have lots of choices.

I’ve put together a few great tips and ideas for making ‘mom’ gift baskets, complete with instructions on how to make them. You can make inexpensive gift baskets or expensive gift baskets depending on your budget. You can easily customize each basket to your recipient.

First make a list of the mom’s hobbies and interests. List everything you can think of that might possibly pertain.

Suggestions: sports, books, television shows, in-house hobbies, outdoor recreation, camping, workshop, tools, golf, fishing, computer-related, environment friendly, golf, tennis, relaxation, food, chocolate, wine, spa, bath and body, fruit, cookie, etc. These are just a few ideas.

You can find many inexpensive items and products for use in making your gift baskets or filling your gift baskets, at ‘dollar’ stores, craft stores, party stores, discount outlets, flea markets, close-out stores and even at garage sales providing the items are new, etc.

For gift containers you can use: any type of basket, wicker basket, straw basket, bucket, laundry basket, plastic container, purse, tin, seasonal container, large tea pot, large upside-down hat, red hat or plastic storage container-put lid underneath.

Other items: extra-large coffee mug, boot, potted plant holder, wire basket, large pasta bowl, large popcorn bowl, cooking pot, clay pot, colander, skillet, antique trunk, champagne bucket, hamper, Asian-style trunk or picnic basket.

For gift basket liner you can use: tissue paper, shredded paper, shredded newspaper, tea towels, dish towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, colored towels, colored napkins, placemats, or fabric pieces.

For gift basket filler you can use: shredded colored paper, straw, Easter basket grass, crumpled newspaper comics, a bed of wrapped chocolates or other wrapped candy.

For items in the container it’ll depend on the specialty or theme of the gift basket – in this case a mom. Here is a small random sampling to give you a few good ideas:

Gift certificate for massage or spa visit, scented oils, scented massage oils, gift certificate to favorite store, gift certificate for restaurant, loofah, fragrant candle, matches to light candles, CD of nature sounds, favorite artist CD, DVD of newer release movie, how-to video or CD, handwritten poem, perfume, cologne, watch, framed photo, inspirational book, spa pillows, bath pillows, spa supplies, bath and body products, facial and body scrubs, handmade soaps, fragrant soaps, shampoos, hand and foot lotion or fluffy towel.

Flavored teas, green tea, specialty tea, herbal tea, biscotti, tea infuser, healthy snacks, fancy chocolates, boxed chocolates, chocolate bars, hot chocolate mix, specialty coffee mix, homemade cookies, homemade brownies, homemade jams, popcorn, caramel corn, giant-size boxed candy, candy canes, suckers, lollipops, apple, pear, orange, persimmon, mango, papaya, chips, pretzels, nuts, gourmet pasta, gourmet olive oil, pre-packaged food items, pancake mixes, brownie mixes, cookie mixes, wooden spoons, your best chocolate chip cookie recipe, Italian recipes, Mexican food recipes or other ethnic recipes, coffee mug, or potholders.

Garden trowel or other garden tools, garden gloves, work gloves, cold weather gloves, leather gloves, garden picks, seeds, hand lotion, flower pot , small tools, gadgets, playing cards, travel-size games, small puzzles, t-shirt, tickets to events,
small plant, disposable camera, a small book,

Computer-related items, mouse pad, yarn, painting or artist supplies, Golf Balls, golf tees, golf knick knacks, tennis balls, tennis knick knacks, key chains, small calendars or desk calendars, barometer, outdoor thermometer, science gadgets, electronic gadgets, health-related items, auto-related items or cinnamon sticks.

For gift basket wrapping you can use tulle netting or better yet, cellophane wrap. If you’re going to use a lot of cellophane you can purchase it in large rolls wholesale through the packaging specialty stores throughout the U.S. but should be easily found in craft stores.

Tie off the wrapped basket with ribbon. Wired fabric ribbon is best if you have it.

For bows: You can use pre-packaged bows but making your own bow is easy and a better presentation if you can do it. Use a huge beautiful bow.

Assemble all your gift basket items, the tools you need, etc. Now line your selected gift container. Then stuff the selected filler into the gift basket to give added height to your items. Place, layer and arrange your selected items on the filler in the gift container. Put the larger items in the back, the smaller items in front.

Fill in the holes or prop up with more filler (shredded paper, Easter basket grass, wrapped chocolates, napkins or holiday napkins etc.)

Also you can use ‘picks’ of artificial flowers to fill in small open spots.

Place your cellophane or other wrap under the gift basket. Center the gift basket on the wrap. Bring the cellophane or other wrap over the top of the gift basket and tie it with ribbon and/or a beautiful bow! Use ribbon and bows to match your theme colors.

Tuck a personalized card in the ribbon and that’s it!

General tips: You can find fabric or wired ribbon cheaply at Costco — especially in the fall prior to Christmas or around holidays but often throughout the year in most stores. You can shred colored paper in a paper shredder.

Try to use non-perishable items except, of course, when making fruit baskets. Use freshly packaged food items; packaged crackers and cookies can go stale in a couple of months.

You can find filler flower ‘picks’ at garage sales cheaply. If you buy ‘picks’ wholesale they are usually around a dollar each.

Try not to mix chocolate or other food fragrant items with non-food fragrant items in the same basket.

Also there’s nothing like learning how to make gift baskets from a video or DVD for making cheap and easy gift baskets. You can view it over and over again and share it with your children, other family members and friends. You can even charge for classes with your new-found knowledge and/or start a home based business if you so desire. In any event, making a gourmet mom gift basket can be cheap and easy.

Many people want golf packages in Arizona, because the state is one of the best for golf around the country.

Set in the desert, Arizona is warm year round (sometimes too warm, depending on who you ask) and offers some of the most beautiful as well as challenging golf you will find anywhere.

They have some of the best desert golf anywhere in the world, which makes for some interesting and beautiful terrain. The courses themselves are very challenging, and one in particular, the TPC at Scottsdale, is home to an annual PGA event.

Therefore, regardless of your ability level you will be up against all you can handle. If you are planning a golf vacation to the state, you will not be disappointed.

First of all, you can get golf packages in Arizona that will fit your budget no matter how much you have to spend. When looking for the best package, try and find ones that include everything-the rental car, accommodations (obviously), and of course, golf at the resort.

The first one of the golf packages in Arizona you might look into is known as the stay n’ play golf package, and this is for 12 Golf Courses in Scottsdale that you can choose from.

For this, you can have your choice out of which of the twelve courses you want to play, and you get a rental car as well as a stay at a luxury resort which includes a pool, fitness center, gazebos, and many other amenities, so if you are bringing along anybody who doesn’t golf, they will have activities to keep them occupied as well.

If you plan on going during the summer for this package, and staying for 4 nights and three rounds you will pay one hundred and eighteen dollars for two players, and only eighty eight for four players. Obviously, they lower the price the more you have, as most places give you a discount for bringing more people.

For a seven night stay on the same package, you will be paying between seventy five and one hundred dollars, again depending on how many people you are bringing. These are very cheap prices, because most Arizona golf courses are very dead in the summer and early fall, so they are desperate to fill up their rooms.

It’s in the winter that you will be paying much more. For the same four night stay during the winter months (January 15-April 15) you will pay between one hundred and eighty and two hundred and ten dollars, quite an increase from the summer option.

Also, there are more ways to save money as well. Try booking your trip during the week instead of the weekend, which is obviously much less busy and therefore, much less expensive. This will not only save you money with the golf itself, but also the hotel, airfare if need be, as well as the rental car and just about everything else.

Also, you get the benefit of the course being much more open and playable, and you don’t have to worry about taking all day to play a round, which can sometimes be the case during the weekends.

The package I listed above is the cheaper one, and I reality there are much more expensive golf packages in Arizona you can get, depending on which courses you decide to play. The courses in the above packages are nice, but nothing special.
